Revelation of Hope - Beaumont
September 6th, 2008
Can you tell me which denomination is presenting the pre-packaged "Revelation of Hope" series in Beaumont, California beginning September 5, 2008? And why is it "Hope" that is being revealed? Every one who doesn’t know Christ "hopes." Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, Scientologists all hope. Anyone who doesn’t know Jesus as their personal Savior "hopes." Anyone who is the victim of a legalistic works-based religion "hopes." That is the best they can do — "hope."
By contrast, Christianity offers "Assurance" — assurance of salvation through the free grace of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior.
"Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me….
I once was lost but now am found,
Was blind, but now, I see."
Grace, amazing grace. It’s not "I hope." It is an emphatic, "I know that my Redeemer liveth!" Stay tuned and we will explore the difference, and what is really being promoted by this so-called "Revelation of Hope."
Starting on September 5, 2008, the Seventh-day Adventist Church will host an evangelistic series of meetings entitled “Revelation of Hope” at the Beaumont Seventh-day Adventist Church. Church-employed conference evangelist Phil Jones will conduct the meetings which he bills as presenting “biblical answers to today’s problems prophesied in the Scriptures.” Jones’ wife, JoAnne, a marriage and family therapist, will present weekend vignettes on “building lasting relationships”.
All that sounds good and well. Let’s take a moment though and "uncover what is actually under the hood" of this supposed "seminar." Following an established Adventist style of advertising, the meetings are not announced as being sponsored by the Seventh-day Adventist Church, nor does the initial advertising state that the meeting venue is a Seventh-day Adventist Church. The website advertising the meetings, RevelationOfHope.org, calls the venue the “Seminar Center” and lists the address of the Adventist church as "Seminar Center, 1343 Palm Ave, Beaumont, CA 92223-1752." Why are they too embarrassed to actually tell the public that it is sponsored by the Seventh-day Adventist denomination, and held at a Seventh-day Adventist Church? In a little bit I will share some Seventh-day Adventist quotes explaining why, but first, let’s learn more.
The helpful website, FormerAdventist.com explains more about this unique Beaumont, California, "Revelation of Hope" seminar series which proclaims, "Confidence, stability and security can by yours through this dramatic presentation." The fact is that there is about as much truth to this wild and nebulous claim as the Serpent’s statement to Eve when he spoke from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil in the Garden of Eden
The Beaumont Seventh-day Adventist Church
Advertising copy appeals to the underlying fear and curiosity people feel as they contemplate world events and the heightened level of concern over terrorism, security, and political change. The RevelationOfHope.org website states the titles of the first three meetings to be held on September 5, 6, and 9, and it states three more “continuing topics”. It does not state the total length of the series, which typically runs about six weeks or 22 meetings, nor does it reveal that the goals of these meetings are to present Seventh-day Adventist doctrine and to convince attendees to become Adventists in order to obey the Bible and properly honor God.
Area advertising is currently being conducted by means of a blimp bearing the URL of the Revelation of Hope website. The blimp, used in 2004 to advertise a similar series of meetings held in San Bernardino, California, was at that time (and is likely still) owned by Adventist lay members Lewis and Marsha Nagel who, with their crew, fly over the area attracting viewers to the website where they may register for the meetings.
The goal of Adventist evangelistic “seminars” is to proselytize and baptize new members into the Seventh-day Adventist Church. The 2004 Revelation of Hope series in San Bernardino, a large city about 21 miles from Beaumont, ended with a mass baptism of 142 people held at the Seventh-day Adventist Loma Linda University Drayson Center swimming pool.
Ironically Seventh-day Adventism doesn’t teach assurance. It just teaches "hope". Here are just two quotes from Seventh-day Adventism’s prophet, "Ellen G. White" — Adventism’s "continuing, authoritative source of truth." Obviously Christians can not have two authorities — the Bible and Ellen White! But Seventh-day Adventists do. See Fundamental Belief #18. What happens when they disagree? In actual practice Seventh-day Adventists use Ellen White to interpret the Bible.
"It is from the standpoint of the light that has come through the Spirit of Prophecy (Mrs. White’s writings) that the question will be considered, believing as we do that the Spirit of Prophecy is the only infallible interpreter of Bible principles, since it is that Christ, through this agency, giving real meaning of his own words." (from the tract The Mark of the Beast, p. 1, G. A. Irwin, General Conference President)
Attendees to this so-called "Revelation of Hope" won’t hear about the requirement to believe in the visions of Ellen G. White until much later, and then in "code words" such as "the Pen of Inspiration", "my favorite author", "Inspiration" and "God’s Messenger to His Remnant People."
Here is what Adventism teaches about salvation. Initially they will deny it. Just ask them if they believe SDA Fundamental Belief #18. If the don’t then they aren’t a true Adventist. If they do then they have to admit that their prophetess Ellen G. White did indeed write the following which they do claim is inspired testimony from direct from God.
Those who accept the Saviour, however sincere their conversion, should never be taught to say or to feel that they are saved. This is misleading. (Christ Object Lessons, page 155)
As long as man is full of weakness–for of himself he cannot save his soul–he should never dare to say, "I am saved." (Selected Messages, vol 1, page 314)
Is this how you, as a Christian, view your assurance of salvation?
God’s Word tells us:
These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God: that ye may know that ye have eternal life… 1 John 5:13
No need for a "Revelation of Hope" here! God’s Word gives us complete assurance — something the quotes above clearly show that Seventh-day Adventism can’t. And that is just the tip of the Seventh-day Adventist cultic "iceberg".
Why not clearly advertise that this "Revelation of Hope" seminar series is intended to convert people to Seventh-day Adventism? Adventists divide everyone into "Adventists" and "non-Adventists". Lutherans, Baptists, Methodists and all other Christian faiths are referred to as "non-Adventists", or in their favorite book, prophetess Ellen G. White’s "Great Controversy", as "apostate Protestantism."
How does Seventh-day Adventism relate to the rest of the body of Christ? SDA General Conference President Robert Pierson tells us:
When you and I joined the General Conference family something special happened to us. When we begin work in the General Conference office we become part of what inspiration describes as God’s highest authority on earth. … All of us are something special in God’s sight. Our relationship to our church, to the world field, to one another, and to the work entrusted to us is unique. We are part of ‘the highest authority that God has on earth.’… This office is the headquarters of our Commanding Officer — the Lord Jesus Christ Himself. These three buildings are not ordinary buildings…. These buildings constitute a consecrated place where God, through His appointed servants —you, me — directs His worldwide work. … As those of us here on the General Conference staff continue our unique service for Him, let us remember that we are daily, hourly, momentarily a part of a group of leaders that constitute the highest authority of God upon earth…
I guess the Baptists, Lutherans, Methodists, Evangelicals and others are not part of the Body of Christ? And what about the great reformers and preachers of the past that we studied about in our Bible classes?
Concerning the "benefits of concealing Adventist identity" when "wooing" non-Adventists, here are three more Adventist quotes:
When Seventh day Adventist ministers go into a community to hold a series of lectures, they conceal, at the first, their denominational connection. They thus hope to draw into their audience people who would never come if they knew that Seventh day Adventists were conducting the meetings. This is a form of deception. There is something the matter with a religious body that is afraid to identify itself as soon as it begins to carry on any activity in a community. (Answers to Objections, Francis Nichol, page 209)
It has undoubtedly been true in years past that Adventists could not have gotten a crowd out to hear them in certain cities, at least, if they had revealed their identity at the outset. But we think that that proves, not the weakness of the Adventist case, but the strength of distorted ideas founded on fanciful myths. The other side of the picture is that many people, after they have attended Adventist meetings for a time, frankly admit that they have changed their ideas about us and are glad that they first came to the meetings not knowing who was conducting them. (Answers to Objections, Francis Nichol, page 209)
I believe you are referring to your distaste for our not always stating up front who we are before we gain a hearing in public meetings. As I have pointed out, your personal taste about "transparency" would invalidate many methods of both Jesus and the Apostle Paul. It would also betray the lives of God’s people under persecution. Honesty doesn’t require telling everything you know up front. (Kevin Morgan, SDA Pastor)
When dealing with Seventh-day Adventists it is important to understand their agenda. If they are attempting to convince a new convert, they have a special "checklist" of subjects that they follow to lure unsuspecting victims.
As Christian Apologetics: Research and Information Service (CARIS) notes:
"Revelation Of Hope is an evangelistic outreach of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. The purpose of these meetings is to introduce you gradually to the unique beliefs of Adventism and to convince you, by the end of the series, that Adventism is the only true church and that you should become a member."
They specialize in converting people who already have some background in Christianity but who are not well-grounded in personal knowledge of the Bible by weaving their unique doctrines and private biblical interpretations into normal-sounding Christian words.
ExposingAdventism.com has an excellent set of questions that will confound any Seventh-day Adventist, and also introduce you to some of their bizarre teachings.
Below are a number of valuable links that expose what Adventism doesn’t teach you until after they have you "hooked". As a former sixth-generation Seventh-day Adventist of 54 years, I am intimately familiar with the way Adventists think. Through the power of the Holy Spirit God led me out of this cultic system of doctrines called Seventh-day Adventism. F or the past two years our family has attended a wonderful local Baptist congregation. It is my prayer that God will richly bless you and open your eyes to the "Truth Behind the Seventh-day Adventist Truth".
